It was dark
And it was cold
But she slept only because of the lark
Which sang a story to be told
The lark said and hoped she could understand:
"I'm sorry I did not listen
And ended up on the bloody sand
For I was too stubborn to understand
I'm sorry for my leaving you
And to not leave a word of goodbye
I'm sorry that the songs I now sing for you
Are only a miserable bye
I wish I could shed a tear too
Whenever you began to cry for me
But nothing seems to fall out of my beady eyes
Though my tiny heart skips a beat each time you cry
I wish I could be human again
And to tell you I'm your unworthy son
Just so you don't have to go through knives and thorns
To search for your already dead son
I had the chance when I was human
But I guess I chose not to
And all I can do now as a lark
Is to chirp and hope one day you'll understand
That I am your son
And I want to say ' I love you, mother!' "
A tear rolled down her bony cheeks
And then she said in return
With her eyes still fast asleep
"I love you too, my son."
