"Hello darling. How are you today? You look very beautiful like you always are," were all that she could hear from her boyfriend. Nevertheless, she was always sad with grieve. She had everything any girl could wish for. Charming, a good boyfriend, intelligence, you name it.....except for one.....eyes.
Lily was blind ever since she was borned. She had never accepted the fact that she was blind. However, there was a man, Chris who fell in love with her although he knew that she was blind. They have been together for like years. As years goes by, he loved her more each day. Lily on the other hand, she couldn't see the love that Chris was showering over her. Chris didn't mind at all. He waited patiently for the right time.
That night, when the moon shone brightly and the stars twinkling with joy, Chris took the chance to ask her this: "We have been together for so long. And even if you can't see me, you're still beautiful in my eyes. Lily dear.....would you marry me?" As soon as those soft, tender words reached her ears, Lily paused for a moment. She didn't know what to reply to that answer of her boyfriend. Therefore, she slowly and gently asked him to give her some time to think over it as to not break her dear boyfriend's feelings.
Although Lily's words had striked Chris's heart, he kept on thinking in a positive manner, hoping that after a few days of thoughts, Lily would say yes. Well, two days had gone by and Lily came up with an answer. It was hard to say it out to Chris knowing that he would be crushed but she gathered all her courage saying 'no'. Chris who was in curiosity asked " Why won't you marry me, Lily dear? Is it something wrong with me? or is it that I'm not good enough for you?" Lily in return said " No, Chris. There is absolutely nothing wrong with you. You have been good to me. It is because of me that I can't be with you. I am blind, Chris. I want get married only when I am able to see the world. Seeing the world around for once and admiring you. So therefore, I have to say no. Sorry, Chris."
After that conflict, months later, Lily received a letter from the hospital. Lily's mother read it out to her. The content in this letter was this:
Dear Miss Lily,
We have found an organ donor who have willingly wished to donate a pair of eyes to you. Please do present yourself at the hospital as soon as possible.
Thanks.
Sincerely,
Dr. Vincent
Lily was flying sky high. She was so excited that she arranged for an appointment with Dr.Vincent the next day. Chris heard the news too and was also happy for her.
The day had come. Lily was going to have a pair of eyes! Her relatives had all present themselves at the hospital. However, the person Lily was looking for was not there. Chris was not there. Many questions began to form in her mind. " Was Chris angry with her? Had he found another woman outside?....." thought Lily. But now this isn't the time to worry about that. It was her dream to have eyes. Eyes that could see. Eyes that could admire everything around. Eyes that could do so much. The operation began and it went on for a few hours. Finally, Lily was out of the operation room.
Several days passed. It was time to undo the bandage on her new eyes. As the bandage was slowly undone, she could see a little light. Then to her mother and to everyone else. It was a miracle! " I can see! I can see! Oh my god! This is a miracle! Doctor, please do tell me who the donor is, oh please do tell!" said Lily with joy. A feeling she had never felt in all her life until now. Doctor Vincent replied " Sorry, Lily. The donor does not want to be known. But I am sure you will find out one day but for now, enjoy your eyes. See everything that you have always wanted. Congratulations, Lily. You are a lucky girl."
Again, days passed so fast for Lily. Chris appeared in her life again that very Sunday. The day before, he had called her to ask her to meet him at his appartment. That Sunday, Lily went to his appartment. The door of Chris' appartment was open. It was strange to find that the door was open. But as soon as Lily entered Chris' appartment, she was stunned. It seems like Chris' had been planning something for the both of them as the appartment was decorated with balloons and roses. Suddenly, Lily heard a voice at the back of her. It was Chris who had crept at the back of her to surprise Lily. He covered Lily's eyes with his hands and asked her not to look at him yet. There, Chris asked again, hoping that this time things work out, "Would you marry me, Lily dear?" Lily turned and took a look at Chris. Instead of feeling happy, she was instantly filled with disgust and hatred. She shouted with anger saying, " You're blind, Chris! How could you do this to me! I was blind and all this while, you did not tell me that you were blind! I will never, ever marry a blind man like you, Chris! I am sorry. I have to go now." Lily quickly left the appartment without even staying to listen to Chris' part of the story. Chris on the other hand, he felt so deppressed, dissappointed, and useless. For the whole day, Chris was only thinking over and over again of the words Lily used on him. "I will never marry a BLIND man!" was what Lily said.
The next day, Lily received a letter from Chris. She opened it and read it. The letter said this:
Dear Lily darling,
To tell you the truth, I was not borned blind. I used to admire the nature around like you are now. Watching you smile, watching you cry, watching you touching my face. Those were times when I had eyes to see. But now, just several days ago, I had gave my eyes to a person that I've devoted all my heart to. You are having my eyes, Lily darling. Please do take care of them. Hopefully, even if we part now, those pair of eyes you are having now will still give you memories I had when I was with you. Therefore, Lily dear, treasure them with care. Goodbye now. It is time for us to move on in our lives. Hope you are happy with my eyes.
Remember, I love you no matter what.
Love,
Chris
(Your donor)
When Lily read it, she felt a sudden guilt in her heart. Tears began to flow out from those pair of eyes. "It was Chris all along. This is his eyes. How could I be so cruel to him?" thought Lily to herself. That morning, Lily drove to Chris' apartment to ask for forgiveness. However, as soon as she arrived, a crowd was already in front of the appartment. Lily hurried over to the crowd to see what was happening. There, laying on the road, was Chris' body, bleeding non-stop. Lily couldn't believe it. "It was all my fault," thought Lily. And she took another glance at Chris and she saw in his hands, was a photo of her and Chris. They were smiling and hugging each other in a beautiful park which was where they first met.
Lily knew now. It was too late for her to say sorry or just a word of thank you and 'I love you' that Chris really deserved all along. Only those pair of eyes she is carrying now that could remind her of Chris.
